Off the Wire: Jacksonville Sharks Sign Former Sandalwood Standout

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Sharks announced the signing of Jacksonville’s own rookie RB Logan Wright (6’0,230) from Georgia Southern. The former Sandalwood Saint led the area in rushing as a senior. Wright comes back to his hometown this 2024 season looking to help the Sharks make another Championship run at the running back position.

At Sandalwood, Wright took the city by storm making a name for himself by running for 1,801 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior, earning a first-team nod on the 2015 Class 8A All-State Elite Team.

He then went on to run for 2,221 yards and 26 touchdowns in nine games his senior year, leading the city of Jacksonville. He was also named first-team selection to the Florida All-State Class 8A team, All-Gateway Conference first team and The Times-Union’s All-First Coast first team as a senior.

Wright signed with Georgia Southern University and continued to add to his accolades being named All Sun Belt Conference two years in a row (2020,2021). The former Eagle tallied up 1997 yards rushing, 308 yards receiving, and 18 touchdowns in his career as an Eagle.

Wright is a huge sign for the Sharks who look to adapt to the IFL style of game using true running backs in their system. Wright looks to continue his leading rushing ways as a Shark behind his explosive style of running and big play capability.

ORLANDO MAGIC SIGN FREE AGENT PLOWDEN

The Orlando Magic have signed free agent guard-forward Daeqwon Plowden. Plowden (6’6”, 216, 8/29/98) played in 24 games last season with Birmingham of the NBA G League, averaging 8.3 ppg., 3.5 rpg. and 1.3 apg. in 20.4 minpg., while shooting .368 (25-68) from three-point range and .862 (25-29) from the free throw line.

Undrafted by an NBA franchise, Plowden played in 154 career games (113 starts) during five seasons at Bowling Green State University (2017-22), averaging 10.5 ppg. and 6.1 rpg. in 25.5 minpg. He was named to the All-Mid-American Conference Second Team in 2019-20 and was named to the All-MAC Third Team in both 2020-21 and 2021-22. P

lowden was also selected to the 2021-22 MAC All-Defensive team. He is BGSU’s all-time leader in games played (154) and is the only player in program history to record at least 1,200 points, 800 rebounds and 100 blocked shots.

Plowden will wear #29 with the Orlando Magic. In addition, Orlando has waived guard/forward Miye Oni. He did not appear in any preseason games with the Magic.

CURRY RECEIVES CHARLIE SIFFORD AWARD

The World Golf Hall of Fame announced today that NBA star Stephen “Steph” Curry will receive The Charlie Sifford Award presented by Southern Company, which honors recipients for their spirit in advancing diversity in golf. Curry will be presented the award on Monday, June 10, 2024, at the World Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony presented by CME Group held during the 124th U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in the Village of Pinehurst, N.C.

The Charlie Sifford Award was created in 2021 to honor an individual who personifies Sifford’s groundbreaking achievements through perseverance, confidence, respect, and adaptability. Curry will be recognized as the recipient of The Charlie Sifford Award during the 2024 World Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony presented by CME Group, at which Padraig Harrington, Sandra Palmer along with the late Johnny Farrell, Beverly Hanson, Tom Weiskopf and the 13 LPGA Founders will be inducted as part of the World Golf Hall of Fame Class of 202
