ESTERO – The Jacksonville Icemen (3-0) wrapped up their first road trip of the young ECHL season undefeated after a 4-3 win over the Florida Everblades (2-2) Saturday night in Estero.
Garret Cockerill scored unassisted at the 19:53 mark of the final period for the victory. It was his first goal of the campaign.
Goaltender Matt Vernon stopped 22 shots to pick up the win. Florida’s Cam Johnson stopped 30 shots.
Florida took an early 1-0 advantage on Patrick Holway’s first goal of the season. But The Icemen took control on goals by Christopher Brown (2) on a power play and Anthony Petruzzelli (2).
Cockerill’s winner came after Florida tied the game on goals by Bobo Carpenter (2) and veteran Joe Pendenza’s first tally of the season.
Jacksonville was 1 for 6 on the power play. Florida was 0 for 2. The Icemen outshot the Everblades 35-24.
On Friday the Icemen defeated Orlando 4-1. Matt Iacopelli, Damien Giroux and Riley Fiddler-Schultz lit the lamp for the Jacksonville against the Solar Bears. Petruzzelli added an empty net goal. Jacksonville’s Joe Murdaca made 33 saves to record his second victory of the season.
Around the League: The South Carolina Stingrays (1-2-0-0) fell to the Newfoundland Growlers (4-1-0-0) by a final score of 5-3 on Saturday afternoon at Mary Brown’s Centre. The Stingrays held a 3-2 lead after two periods but gave up three goals in the final frame. Jarid Lukosevicius had a goal, an assist, and a fight for South Carolina. Goaltender Garin Bjorklund made 23 saves for the Stingrays….A four-goal first period flipped a 2-0 deficit, as the Greenville Swamp Rabbits bested the Savannah Ghost Pirates 5-3 on Friday night at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
