JAGA: Recaps of Billy Maxwell Memorial Tournament and Club Team Championship

JACKSONVILLE – It’s been a busy couple of days on the Jacksonville area golf scene. On Thursday, Nov. 18th, 80 golfers and guests turned out to honor the late Billy Maxwell at his home club, Hyde Park Golf Club.

Four days later, on November 22nd, JAGA and the Northern PGA Chapter conducted the 24th Club Team Championship at World Golf Village-Slammer & Squire with 25 teams competing. Both were wonderful events for different reasons.

Here are recaps of each….

Billy Maxwell Memorial Tournament

Festivities kicked off with Billy Maxwell’s fellow North Texas State University golfer, World Golf Hall of Fame inductee and paraplegic Dennis Walters entertaining the crowd with his inspiring mix of trick shots, humor and message of never being afraid to dream big.

Former PGA TOUR commissioner Deane Beman then shared a few funny recollections of his playing days with Maxwell. The Jacksonville Area Golf Association closed the proceedings by presenting a plaque in honor of Billy for all he did for golf both locally and nationally throughout his career. It was presented to his daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Tommy Bevill, who now run the Hyde Park golf facility.

The event was organized by Hyde Park and the North Florida Junior Golf Foundation, with guidance provided by JAGA director (TPC Sawgrass) and lifetime PGA member Duke Butler III. Proceeds from the event benefited NFJGF.

In addition to Walters and Beman, several other golf dignitaries were in attendance, including three past U.S. Amateur champions in Beman, Bob Dickson and Bubba Dickerson, five-time PGA TOUR winner Blaine McCallister, former Walker Cup competitor Todd Demsey, former PGA TOUR deputy commissioner Tim Smith, and former PGA TOUR senior rules official Mike Shea.

The winners of the two-man scramble were:

Gross

1 – John Milton & Brad Rollinson (60)

2 – Bob Dickson & Jeff Adams (62)

3 – Bruce Wallace & Rich Langille (62)

Net

1 – Hank Veno & Donald Lewis, Jr. (59)

2 – Judd Nieman & Todd Demsey (60)

3 – Blaine McCallister & Paul Abdulla (61)

The Bevill’s goal is to make the tournament an annual affair.

24th Club Team Championship

Jax Beach Golf Club topped 24 other teams from Northeast Florida to claim the 24th Club Team Championship at World Golf Village-Slammer & Squire when they fired a 17-under-par team score of 127.

The winning team featured Northern Chapter PGA professional Thomas Gelsomino and amateur partners Brent Dietz, Keanu Evans and Michael Lupi.

The format was two net best balls of the foursome. The Jacksonville Area Golf Association and the Northern Chapter of the North Florida PGA co-hosted the event.

Three teams tied for second, three strokes back. They were (with PGA professionals listed first) Gerry James, Gary Blackwell, Joe Masarweh and Desi Desiderio of The Palencia Club; Rob Lee, Bruce Kelnhofer, Charlie Kelnhofer and Chandler Gruenemier of Westside Golf Center; and Cary Splane, Vince Celestino, Alan Keary and Brian Boyle of Marsh Creek Country Club.

First played in 1998, Jax Beach won the Club Team title for the first time. The defending champions, Jacksonville Golf and Country Club, finished tied for ninth.

Low pro honors went to Stephanie Connelly-Eiswerth of Eagle Harbor Golf Club with a 5-under-par 67, three better than the 70s recorded by Hayes Farley of San Jose Country Club and host professional Jake Etherton.

Connelly-Eiswerth further distinguished herself by making a hole-in-one at Slammer & Squire’s par-3 15th hole.
