Orange-Seminole Wins National Championship, Broward 2nd at USTA League Nationals

One Florida USTA League team took home a national title while another finished runner-up over the weekend at USTA League National Championship events held in Surprise, Ariz. and Orlando, Fla.

At the USTA National Campus in Orlando, the 55 & Over 8.0 women’s team representing Orange-Seminole (Lake Cane Tennis Center, Orlando) defeated USTA Middle States (Washington, N.J.) 3-0 in the final.

Earlier in the day, the Orlando squad defeated a team representing USTA Missouri Valley (Norman, Okla.), 2-1 in the semifinals.

The team is captained by Angela Tuckerman and features Terri Haddock, Tami Florin, Mary Ann Koula, Penny Watzka, Patricia Monserez, Lisa Peele, Emily Sakol, Barby Molnar, Jamie Roedig, Jennifer Widga-Kirby and Katherine Foulk.

At the men’s 40 & Over National Championships held at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Surprise, Ariz., the Florida team from Broward County (Midtown Athletic Club, Weston) was defeated 3-1 in the championship match by the squad representing USTA Eastern (Mount Kisco, N.Y.).

Earlier in the day, the Broward men triumphed over USTA Pacific Northwest (Bellevue, Wash.) with a 3-1 win in the semifinals.

The team is captained by Saeid Sadoughi and features Carlos Reyes, Alex Yokana, Deepak Ahya, Lawrence Freni, Samir Asaad, Fernando Machado, Jorge Alejandro Romo, Mitchell Bookbinder, John Hingley, and German Avellaneda.
