ACC: Fitzgerald’s Leg Leads Florida State to First Win of Season

TALLAHASSEE – Syracuse came up short in a 33-30 road loss at Florida State on Saturday afternoon. The Orange trailed by 10 on two occasions in the final 20 minutes of regulation but fought back to the the game at 30, before the ‘Noles drilled a walk-off field goal to down ‘Cuse in the ACC opener.

Garrett Shrader tied the Syracuse record for rushing touchdowns in a game by a quarterback (3) and Sean Tucker rushed for 102 yards to record his seventh 100-yard rushing game of his young career.

Florida State led 3-0 after the first quarter and extended its lead to 9-0 with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Travis to Camren McDonald. Seminoles kicker Ryan Fitzgerald missed the extra point to keep the game within a touchdown at 7:40 in the second frame.

Shrader’s first touchdown, a 55-yard, rush at 6:21 put the Orange on the scoreboard. This time it was Syracuse kicker Andre Szmyt who missed the extra point to make it 9-6 Seminoles.

Shrader bulldozed his way into the end zone with a five-yard rush to give Syracuse its first and only lead of the game, 13-9, with 2:33 to play in the half. FSU responded with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Travis to Keyshawn Helton for a 16-13 lead with 36 seconds on the clock.

The Orange found themselves in the end zone quickly but Shrader was picked off in the end zone to end the first half with FSU ahead 16-13.

Florida State’s Andrew Parchment had a three-yard touchdown rush to make it 23-13 in the third. Syracuse was stopped on fourth-and-goal but the Orange defense forced a three and out to give SU another opportunity before the end of the quarter. This time, Shrader would not be denied as he dove up and over the goal line to make it 23-20 after Szmyt made the extra point.

A touchdown by Jashaun Corbin gave FSU a 10-point lead, 30-20, early in the fourth quarter. Shrader connected with Anthony Queely to once again make it a three-point game with 10:35 to play in regulation.

Syracuse’s defense came up big again with an interception by freshman phenom Darian Chestnut at the FSU 41-yard line. Shrader and Tucker exchanged rushes to put the Orange in field goal range where Szmyt connected for 24 yards tying the game 30-all.

The Orange forced a three-and-out but were unable to get to field goal range as FSU would take over with 1:03 to play in the game. The Seminoles ran the clock down and a 34-yard field goal by Fitzgerald as time expired gave Florida State its first win over the season.

Shrader threw for 150 yards with 13 completions and one touchdown.
