Players Championship 2021: Lee Westwood Takes Lead with 2nd-Round 66

PONTE VEDRA BEACH – Lee Westwood shot 66 Friday to take over the lead after Round 2 at The Players Championship.

Westwood sits at nine strokes under par for the tournament at TPC Sawgrass, one ahead of Matthew Fitzpatrick in second place. Fitzpatrick: a fellow Englishman, added a second straight 68 to be 8-under.

“I care less about the outcomes,’’ said Westwood. “I still care about my performance, and that in turn leads me to work as hard as I’ve always worked. But I’ve been working with a psychologist for a few years now, and we just focus on the process, we don’t focus on the outcomes and things we can’t control. The only thing I can control when I go out there is the process and making sure I have fun. I make sure I have fun.’’

Opening round leader Sergio Garcia fell into a tie for third after he followed it up with a 72.

“There were a lot of good things,’’ said Garcia. “Unfortunately, a lot of bad things [too]. But more than anything there was a lot of fighting, and that’s one of the things that I’m most proud of because when things are not really happening and you miss a couple putts here and there, it’s easy to kind of let the round get away from you.’’

Second round highlights included Brendon Todd’s ace on the eighth hole with a 5-wood from 213 yards. Chris Kirk holed out for eagle from 147 yards at the first hole. Mark Hubbard holed out for eagle from 181 yards at the seventh hole

Several big names are also heading home after missing the cut, including Xander Schauffele, Rory McIlroy, Tony Finau, Patrick Cantlay and Rickie Fowler.
