JU: Bears Score Late in 1-0 Win Over Doplhins

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University men’s soccer played Mercer tight for 90 minutes, falling 1-0 on Sunday.

The Bears scored the lone goal of the game in the 70th minute to prevail over the Dolphins (0-2-1) at Southern Oak Stadium.

Jacksonville’s defense rose up time and time again in the first half, as Matt Levy was tested throughout the first half and came up with five of his six save on the day in the first 45.

After an early yellow card for Mercer, the Bears regathered and forced Levy to make saves three times in the first 11 minutes. The JU was able to push into the attacking zone with Jose Manzo in the 14th minute, whose shot to the upper righthand corner of the net was turned away.

The Dolphins created another opportunity in the 27th minute, when Mason Tunbridge’s shot on goal was saved. He then committed a foul to draw a yellow two minutes later, setting up a free kick chance for Mercer than ended in another Levy save.

Reed Davis challenged the Bears keeper in the 33rd minute, which was saved out setting up a Jacksonville corner, one of three earned on the afternoon.

Late in the first half, Mercer had two shots on goal, one that went off of the woodwork and another that was saved again by Levy off of a corner.

After the Mercer goal in the second half, neither team was able to put another shot on goal.

Jacksonville starts conference play on Friday, traveling to Deland, Fla. for an ASUN tilt with Stetson at 6 p.m.
