JACKSONVILLE – Goaltender Garret Sparks shut the door on the Icemen in a shootout as the Orlando Solar Bears (6-4-0-0) took a 4-3 ECHL victory over Jacksonville (4-6-1-1) Friday night before 3,608 at Veterans Memorial Arena.

Dylan Sadowy’s shootout goal was the margin of victory. The forward just signed with Orlando this week.

Last season Sadowy posted 34 points (17g-17a) and 62 penalty minutes in 29 games with the Kalamazoo Wings and was named to the Western Conference All-Stars for the 2020 ECHL All-Star Classic in Wichita.

Sparks stopped shots by Nick Saracino, Wacey Rabbit and Jeff Taylor in the shootout.

The Icemen’s Jared VanWormer sent the game into overtime.

The Solar Bears were forced to play down a man early in overtime when they were whistled for a bench minor penalty for too many men on the ice just 46 seconds into the extra frame, but Sparks and the defense came up big, with Sparks turning aside five Jacksonville shots in OT, sending the game to the penalty shot contest.

Saracino made it 1-0 with his club leading fourth goal of the season on a power play. Saracino leads the Icemen with 10 points (4g, 6a) overall and also leads his team in scoring against Orlando with four assists.

A goal by Taylor Cammarata tied the game.

Pascal Aquin put the hosts up 2-1 in the second period. But back to back Orlando goals by Tyler Bird and Jerry D’Amigo gave the visitors their first lead of the night late in the final period, 3-2.

Eamon McAdam made 32 saves in the loss.

Sparks, who also finished with 32 saves, returned to the Solar Bears yesterday after spending time in training camp with the NHL’s Calgary Flames. Sparks has appeared in 37 NHL contests with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2015-2019, while making one appearance last season with the Vegas Golden Knights.
