JU: Hayes, Perry Propel Dolphins Past Warriors

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville University women’s basketball team used a trio of big performances to record their first victory of the season Friday night against Webber International, as the Dolphins (1-3) downed the Warriors (6-2) 67-52.

“I was impressed with DeShari Graham’s energy and effort all night long,” said head coach Darnell Haney. “Graham and Jada Perry are workhorses and great competitors and can play with anyone on any night. Ashley Malone had big energy in the first half and carried that throughout the game. Perry, Khalela Hayes and Shekinah Rachel were all great on the glass all night long, especially in the second half. They got us a lot of second chance opportunities on offense and got us to the free throw line to help us keep up the pressure. K.K. and Jada both had big nights and I really thought they performed well.”

Jacksonville would go on to extend their lead to as much as 17 with just a little over three minutes remaining in the second quarter and take a 37-24 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

The Warriors made things interesting in the third quarter, as a 15-2 run through the middle stages of the period made it a two-point game, but the Dolphins would respond and extend the lead back to 11 heading to the fourth quarter.

Jacksonville would weather another small run by Webber in the fourth and would end the game on a 12-0 run, shutting out the opposition over the final five minutes of the contest.

Graham led all scorers with 18 points on 6-10 shooting from the field, including a perfect 3-3 from deep.

Perry finished the night with her first double-double of the season and fifth of her career with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Hayes posted her first career double-double off the bench, as she finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive glass. All seven players who dressed for the Dolphins scored in the contest.

The Dolphins will have the weekend off before playing host to Flagler Monday night at Swisher Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 7 P.M.
