Bonts: Florida State Fizzles in 41-17 ACC Home Loss to Pittsburgh

TALLAHASSEE – The season continues to slip away from Florida State.

Saturday, in Pittsburgh’s (4-4, 3-4 ACC) first trip to Tallahassee since 1982, the Panthers defeated FSU 41-17. Pitt rushed for four touchdowns, including two from reserve QB Nick Patti in goal-line scenarios

Pitt senior QB Kenny Pickett returned to the starting lineup after missing the previous two games due to injury. Pickett was efficient, completing 21-of-27 passes for 210 yards with no TDs or turnovers

After a 51 yard field goal by Pitt’s Alex Kessman, the Seminoles answered with Wyatt Rector’s one yard TD run to make it 7-3.

FSU (2-5, 1-5) went ahead 14-3 when QB Travis Jordan ran 88 yards. Travis broke Florida State’s program record for a quarterback with his fifth straight game with a rushing touchdown. He broke a tie with Charlie Ward (1992) and Christian Ponder (2008), who each had four.

Tight end Camren McDonald led FSU receivers with seven catches for 61 yards, setting new career highs. Running back Lawrance Toafili set a career high in catches with four.

The visitors cut the the lead on Patti’s one yard scoring sneak in the second quarter.

Pitt pulled away open the second half. Patti scored again. This time from two yards out. Pickett added a 10-yard TD run to make it 24-14.

Parker Grothaus rounded out the FSU scoring with a 47-yard field goal

The vistors owned the final 20 minutes with two TDs.

Brandon Hill had a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, the Panthers’ third pick of the game.

FSU defensive back Jarvis Brownlee Jr. and linebackers Emmett Rice and Stephen Dix Jr. led the Noles in tackles with eight. Brownlee’s total doubled his previous single-game career high of four set in the 31-28 win vs. No. 5 North Carolina on Oct. 17.

Florida State had been averaging 197 yards rushing per game but couldn’t get a ground game going against one of the nation’s top rush defenses.

Florida State will play at NC State on Saturday.
