FSU’s Blackman Earns Unitas Golden Arm Recognition

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Redshirt junior quarterback James Blackman was named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List Tuesday.

The award is presented to the nation’s top senior quarterback, or an upperclassman quarterback that is on track to graduate with his class.

Blackman, from South Bay, Florida, is tied for 10th in program history with 41 touchdown passes. He ranks 12th in FSU history in career completions (390), passing yards (5,079) and total offense (5,062).

As FSU’s primary starter in 2019, Blackman appeared in 12 games and threw for 2,339 yards and 17 touchdowns. In the season opener against Boise State, Blackman threw for 327 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, just the 27th 300-3-0 game in Florida State history.

Blackman appeared in four games while redshirting in 2018. He threw for a career-high 421 yards on the road at North Carolina State that season.

In 2017, Blackman became the first true freshman to start at quarterback for the Noles since 1985.

He capped that season, in which he threw for 19 touchdowns, with an Offensive MVP performance in the Independence Bowl, setting an Independence Bowl record with four touchdown passes. His 2,230 passing yards were the third most nationally among freshmen.
