NHL: Lightning Undefeated in Round Robin with 3-2 Win Over Boston

TORONTO – Tampa Bay improved to 2-0-0 in the round robin after defeating the Boston Bruins 3-2 Wednesday evening at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena.

Tyler Johnson scored the game-winning goal with 1:27 remaining in regulation to put the Lightning back in front 3-2, a lead they would hold onto over the final 87 seconds.

 Johnson recorded his second point of the game to go along with his assist on Alex Killorn’s power-play goal in the first period.

Yanni Gourde earned the primary assist on Johnson’s game-winner with his initial shot off a rush that was blocked away by Boston goalie Tuukka Rask (32-of-35 saves). Killorn also earned an assist on the scoring play, his second point of the evening.

Brayden Point netted his first goal of the 2020 postseason at 7:33 of the first period to put the Lightning in front 1-0. Nikita Kucherov tallied the primary assist on Point’s game-opening goal. Kucherov also has two points this postseason.  Ondrej Palat picked up the second assist for his first point of the playoffs.

Tampa Bay went in front 2-0 on the power play at 10:32 of the second, Alex Killorn tipping a shot with his skate past Rask to double the Lightning advantage.

Boston got on the board at 16:43 of the second period, Charlie McAvoy blasting a shot from the point past Lightning netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy to cut the Bolts’ advantage to 2-1.

The Bruins’ Chris Wagner tied the game 2-2 at 1:47 of the third with his rebound of Zdeno Chara’s shot from above the circles.

Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 25-of-27 shots in the win over Boston Wednesday to improve to 2-0 this postseason.

The Lightning complete the round robin portion of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs Saturday when they host the Philadelphia Flyers from Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena.

 GAME NOTES: Killorn scored the first power-play goal of the 2020 playoffs for the Bolts….Victor Hedman tallied an assist on Killorn’s power-play goal for his first point of the postseason….Tampa Bay outshot Boston 35-27. Ondrej Palat, Erik Cernak and Nikita Kucherov led the way for the Lightning with four shots apiece…Tampa Bay captain Steven Stamkos (lower-body injury) did not play Wednesday.
