JU Sits Third After Two Rounds in Greenville

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Maia Samuelsson shot a 73-71 and is third on the leaderboard through two rounds to help lead Jacksonville University women’s golf into a tie for third overall with one round to play at the Pirate Collegiate Classic.

The team’s second round 296 was tied for the third-best team score of the day.

“The girls played great today, grinded hard in the second round,” said Head Coach Kathryn Dougan. “Maia played well, showed great consistency.”

Samuelsson had the lowest score on the team in both rounds Monday, wrapping with the second-lowest round of her brief college career to this point. She started off strong, birdieing her first hole of the day, and sinking her first career eagle in the first round as well. In the second round she caught fire, scoring red numbers on three holes on the front nine, and picking up another birdie on the back. In all, she made five through the two rounds, as well as the eagle and 23 pars, good for seventh most in the field.

Hannah Berman was a model of consistency throughout the day, scoring 75 in both rounds. She was right behind Samuelsson with 22 pars total, and also sank four birdies and sits in a tie for 10th after moving three spots up the leaderboard in the second round.

“Hannah was steady all day and it really a great showing from our entire lineup,” said Dougan.

Samantha Brimhall was the biggest mover of the day for the Dolphins, climbing 15 spots in round two with a 73 to move into a tie for 19th. She rattled off birdies on four of her first six holes of the second round. She shot in the red six total times on the day, collecting the most birdies on the team.

“Sam persevered in the second and came back strong,” said Dougan.

Paula Trejo Lerdo birdied two holes and Mawgan Vater sank three, as they sit T36 and T38, respectively.

“Tomorrow, our focus will be on more accuracy on some of the tough stretches of holes,” Dougan said.
