JUMBO SHRIMP: Generals Use Big Third Inning to Win Opener, 5-0

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Opening Day for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp didn’t go quite as planned as the Jackson Generals took a 5-0 Southern League win at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Jacksonville starter Rob Dugger had an easy first inning against the Generals.

Second baseman Andy Young flied out to right field. After a walk to Pavin Smith, Dugger got Jamie Westbrook to pop out and then he struck out Daulton Varsho to end the top of the inning.

The next frame was a different story.

With two out in the second Jackson’s Drew Ellis walked and then scored on Ben DeLuzzio’s flare to right field.

DeLuzzio went to third on the throw to home. Ellis barely avoided the tag by catcher Rodrigo Vigil to make it 1-0.

The visitors scored three more runs in the third.

With one out Smith sliced a single to right. Westbrook was hit by a pitch. That set the table for Varsho’s two RBI double. Marcus Wilson made it 4-0 when he skied a double over the head of centerfielder Magneuris Sierra’ head scoring Varsho.

Righthander Parker Bugg came into the game in the fifth after a Dugger walked Varsho to begin the inning. Bugg kept the Generals lead at four runs.

The Jumbo Shrimp made some noise in the sixth.

Anfrenee Seymour, pinch hitting for Bugg, reached first on an error and stole second. Brian Miller grounded out to short advancing Seymour to third. But Ryan Atkinson, in relief for starter Justin Donatella, recorded two strikeouts to end any threat.

Jackson would add to their lead on Smith’s sacrifice fly that scoring DeLuzzio, who singled earlier in the eighth. DeLuzzio stole second and went to their on Young’s infield single.

Donatella picked up the win. Dugger took the loss.

The game was the first of a four-game against the Generals.
