JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Despite 35 points and 11 rebounds from senior All-America candidate Dylan Windler, Belmont University dropped a 79-77 decision to Maryland Thursday in the 2019 NCAA Tournament from VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.

“I’ll tell you what, I feel so lucky just to be a part of a game like that,” said Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon. “You work your whole life to be a part of it. Any game you can win in this tournament is great, and I’m just so proud of my group. We gutted it out. We just kept battling, we kept battling, we kept battling. We played with great poise offensively. Defensively down the stretch we were just good enough.

Belmont’s historic season ends at 27-6. Despite Windler’s 35 and Kevin McClain’s 19, Maryland had just enough to advance to Saturday’s game.

Jalen Smith led four Maryland players in double figures with 19 points, including a deciding three-pointer with 1:41 remaining.

Freshman Nick Muszynski capped a 10-0 Belmont run that gave the Bruins a 26-14 lead 11 minutes in. Belmont led 40-34 at halftime.

Maryland would score the first 14 points of the second half to claim a 48-40 lead, but Belmont responded in kind.

Darryl Morsell increased Maryland’s lead to two points with under three seconds remaining with one free throw. Morsell proceeded to miss the second free throw, and Windler’s final shot from near midcourt to win narrowly missed.

GAME NOTES: Belmont committed only five turnovers….McClain added 19 points and six rebounds.. Windler, McClain and Mack Mercer concluded their Belmont careers with 94 victories. The game featured four ties and nine leads changes…Maryland will be looking to advance to the regional semifinals for the first time since 2016 when it faces LSU.
