ARENA NOTES: Orlando Predators to Return in 2019; Jacksonville Sharks Sign QB

The National Arena League Board of Advisors has unanimously approved an expansion team for the Orlando market to play in the 2019 season. The National Arena League held a press conference at the Amway Center in downtown Orlando where the team announced its ownership and staff.

Last month, the National Arena League announced its first 2019 expansion team with the unveiling of the New York Streets, that will play in New York City for 2019. Expansion in 2018 proved very successful, as the NAL witnessed the Massachusetts Pirates, Maine Mammoths, and Carolina Cobras succeed on and off the field.

The Massachusetts Pirates had the regular seasons’ best record, the Carolina Cobras became the National Arena League Champions and the Maine Mammoths earned Franchise of the Year in the National Arena League.

SHARKS NOTES:  Fullback Alstevis Squirewell (6’0,265) signs with the Jacksonville Sharks for his first year of arena football. Squirewell attended the Green Bay Packers rookie mini camp and training camp before signing with the Jacksonville Sharks for the 2019 season. Squirewell attended Newberry College, a Division II school, and played on the defensive line. From 2013-2015, Squirewell totaled 154 tackles (69 solo) (85 assisted), 13 sacks, two interceptions, four batted balls, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and one blocked kick. In 2015, his lone interception was returned for a 32-yard touchdown. Squirewell is a native of Great Falls, SC and attended Great Falls High School. In his high school career, he was a four-year starter. In his 2010-2011 season, he totaled 1,137 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on 125 carries as well as four receptions for 33 yards. He had 104 total tackles, four sacks, and two interceptions….QB Jonathan Bane (6’4, 205) signs with the Sharks for his fifth year of arena football and first with the Sharks. Last season, Bane signed with the newly formed Maine Mammoths and became one of the NAL’s top quarterbacks, During his time in Maine, Bane started 14 of the team’s 15 games completing 249 passes for 2,689 yards, and 59 TDs. On the ground, Bane led the team in rushing with 141 yards on 30 carries and scored four rushing touchdowns for the Mammoths. Despite the team starting in the NAL 1-7, Bane and the Mammoths turned it around winning all six of their last games and finishing the year 7-8, only one win away from a playoff berth. By joining the Sharks, Bane will also reunite with former teammate and All-NAL Wide Receiver Devin Wilson. Together Wilson and Bane became major factors in the Mammoths win streak defeating Carolina (55-29), Columbus (42-35), and Jacksonville (43-36).

After warm-ups, open tryouts will begin at 10:00 am and will last until noon or until each player has been properly evaluated. Pre-Register online at www.jaxsharks.com/team/open-tryouts/ and save $10. Pre-registering online for open tryouts will include a $65 fee which can be paid by credit card or debit card. Pre-registration will end at 4:30 pm on March 15th. The Jacksonville Sharks will be allowing walk-in registration on the day of the tryout. To register at open tryouts you will need to bring a valid ID, sign all open tryout paperwork, and you will be required to pay the $75 walk-in registration fee that will only be payable by credit or debit card.
