ECHL: Florida Everblades Spoil Jacksonville Icemen’s Homecoming, 5-1

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Icemen, playing their only game at Veterans Memorial Arena in January, dropped a 5-1 ECHL decision Saturday night before a record crowd of 11,288 to Southern Division rival Florida.

It was the second of three straight game against each other. The division leading Everblades (30-8-5) won Friday night at home 3-0.

Joe Cox and John McCarran each scored two goals in the win.

The Icemen (23-18-1-1) struck early on Military Appreciation Night. Eli Lichtenwald scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Jacob Cederholm and Kayle Doetzel. The hosts took that 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

The visitors tied the game on Kyle Platzer’s 20th goal of the season. McCarron’s short handed breakaway beat Mikhail Berdin on his second tally of the game to make it 3-1 late in the second period.

Berdin made 30 saves for Jacksonville. Former Iceman Jamie Phillips made 18 saves.

Florida becomes the first team with 30 wins this season. The Icemen and Everblades meet again Tuesday night in Estero, Fla.

GROWLERS COACHING CHANGE –¬†Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas announced that Newfoundland native and Growlers head coach Ryane Clowe will be stepping down from his position due to medical reasons, effective immediately. Assistant coach John Snowden has been named the Growlers new head coach while the club will search for a new assistant coach.
