JU: Liberty Trips Up Dolphins on the Road, 69-53

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Jacksonville University men’s basketball team (8-10, 1-2 ASUN) did its best to keep pace with Liberty (14-4, 3-0 ASUN) on Saturday afternoon but a late run by the home side kept the Dolphins from a perfect road trip in the form of a 69-53 defeat.

This matchup ended up having plenty of layers to it as the Dolphins fought turnover problems in the first half only to overcome those to lock in and hold Liberty without a field goal for nearly a seven-minute stretch in the second half. Only one Dolphin, JD Notae, found his way into double figures (15 points) while Jace Hogan nearly collected a double-double (9 pts, 9 reb). Tyreese Davis chipped in nine points, most of which came during the stretch run in the second half.

Jacksonville was slow to find its rhythm on offense in the first half, finding the bottom of the net on just 11 of 28 tries for a 39.3 percent clip. Turnovers plagued JU as it committed eight that turned into 11 points on the other end for the Flames, the exact tally that created the difference at halftime, 35-24.

The early second half was a difference story, partially offensively but definitely defensively for Jacksonville as it chipped away at the Liberty lead. By the 7:35 mark, following a Davis drive and score, the Dolphins were facing a six-point deficit with the chance to make it four on the other side of a media timeout. Hogan knocked in one of two free throws to cut it to five but that was as close as the Dolphins came in this one.

Liberty closed the game on a 22-11 run to secure the victory and remain unbeaten in its debut campaign in the ASUN. Jacksonville moves to 1-2 in league play and will return home on Wednesday to square off with another new league member, North Alabama. That game is set to tip at 7 p.m. inside Swisher Gymnasium.
